Thandie Newton was remarkable in the role, giving a career-best performance. Much more directly – and quickly - discovering the truth of who she was than Dolores, or any other host, Maeve’s story was continually exciting, as she began to retain more and more information, and would test the boundaries of her reality in order to get more knowledge. While Dolores was our first point of contact, and on her own fascinating journey, it was another host, Maeve (Thandie Newton), who would provide Westworld with what was often its most captivating material. From seeing how guests like William (Jimmi Simpson, who impressively portrayed his character's many different shades) are welcomed to the park, to what goes on behind-the-scenes cleaning up and fixing the “killed” hosts, to what it’s like for the hosts to be spun off into a new story thanks to guest interaction, it was all impressively well thought out and immersive.
The first two episodes vividly brought us into Westworld and the programmers’ realm below, establishing most of our main characters and the roles they inhabited. The idea of using one of the hosts, and their repeating loops, as our initial “in” was risky, but the compelling world and Wood’s thoughtful, layered performance offered an incredibly strong hook, as we began to see the signs that Dolores was not quite following her programming as planned. Evan Rachel Wood also deserves tremendous credit for making her host character, Dolores, so engaging from the start. Abrams, came out of the gate with an incredibly strong, confident pilot, that did an excellent job establishing the parameters of this wild west theme park and the robot “hosts” who were built to entertain the guests - in whatever way was required.

That being the case, it was notable when Westworld managed to truly resonate this fall, with a ton of attention paid to the series, as it quickly gathered a passionate, highly involved fanbase.īest of all, the show deserved the attention. Even HBO has had trouble replicating successes on the level of The Sopranos and Game of Thrones in recent years – The Leftovers is one of TV's best shows, but it often feels, unfortunately, like no one is watching it.
